I am not really sure how to describe it, but Aidan has seemed to, for lack of a better word, 'mature' over the past few weeks. OK, I totally realize that he is only 5 years old, so maturity might seem like an odd adjective to apply, but that seems to be the only way to explain it. He melts down less and seems to 'get things' more. If he asks something and I say no, instead of the hissy fit we used to get, we know get a roll of the head and an 'o-o-k-a-y...'. It really is refreshing. He seems to understand, or better yet, accept, the rules that exist in our house. (I LOVE that one!). Twice in the past week he has gone up to perfect strangers, said 'excuse me' and proceeded to have a conversation with them. (Thankfully he asked us first if that was ok). In the past he would have dragged me along, hand in hand, to help him. And, if I declined to assist, he would not have gone. I can't help but wonder if his BMX experience has something to do with this change. I know it sounds strange, but it is the only thing see that is different recently. And, it sort of makes sense. He is very independent on the course. He is riding with older kids and even adults. He is seeing progress from ride to ride. I think this has all served to boost his confidence. Then again, maybe it is just that he is growing up and I am in complete denial of that fact....
